The Common Goldfish

One of the original types of fish ever to be domesticated is the Common Goldfish. They can be identified by their single tail and anal fins. The tail fin is short with rounded tips.Today it is the most popular fish found in home aquariums. The Common goldfish has its origins in China and found its way to Europe in the 1600's. Common Goldfish are most often gold in color but can also include red, orange, gold, white, and black and yellow variations. In extreme cases they can achieve a length of approximately two feet and weigh up to ten pounds.

They are, as their name implies, quite common and are a favorite house pet around the globe due to their robust nature. They require little maintenance and they are affordable. They can live in diverse conditions ranging from indoor aquariums to outdoor ponds. If well cared for, common goldfish can live up to 10 years or more in captivity. Some have survived as many as 50 years. They are curious fish that will quickly become bored without items or other fish to interact with. They are social animals who prefer living in groups and are able to interact with any fish belonging to the same species. They should ideally be kept in an aquarium of at least 10 gallons. They can also catch diseases generated by inferior water quality, overfeeding and placing too many fish in one tank. They are notedly dirty, producing a great deal of waste, and constantly stir up the substrate in their endless search for food. While they can live in a fishbowl, it is not recommended, for the water often gets dirty very quickly.
